The municipalities of Mytilene and Lemnos are now new members of the network, becoming the first islands of the Northern Aegean to participate in this initiative! Both municipalities, through decisions of their Municipal Councils, are committing to policies and practices focused on the protection of the marine environment. With the addition of these two municipalities, the Blue Municipalities Network now comprises 23 members representing 6 regions of Greece.
Both islands, due to their geographical location, face significant challenges regarding marine pollution. However, the commitment of the local authorities to finding meaningful solutions sends a message of optimism. In this context, expanded actions are planned for 2025 by Aegean Rebreath on both islands, aiming to ensure the necessary evaluation and targeted planning to address these issues.
The Blue Municipalities Network is expanding at the national level and is also gaining recognition internationally. This fact highlights the important role and added value of the efforts made by local governments!
