The Municipality of Amorgos is a new member to the Blue Municipalities Network following the decision of the municipal council of the island that had its first meeting held in 2023. It is the 9th island of the Cyclades region to join the national network which now counts 19 members. At the same time, the members of the municipal council decided positively on the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with our organization.
This decision comes as a result of the consultation developed during the last months between Aegean Rebreath and the municipality of Amorgos as well as of the efforts that made on the island so far. The collaboration foresees the implementation of holistic initiatives in collaboration with the fishing community and the local community to protect the marine environment through clean ups, installation of a marine litter collection station, educational and research activities. The membership of the Municipality of Amorgos coincides with the ongoing process for acquiring a legal entity for the network.
In this context, our organization has already planned activities for the island of Amorgos during 2023 according to the needs that have already been identified by the local community. We continue our efforts for the protection of the marine environment both at operational and institutional level.
