A three-day event in Santorini for World Oceans Day was successfully organized by the municipal authorities and Aegean Rebreath, aiming to communicate the need to protect our seas. This three-day event included educational workshops in Thirasia island, underwater clean-ups in ports and reefs, as well as research activities. Notably, the operations to retrieve abandoned nets were live streamed on social media. The events were attended by the MP Mr. Kafouros, who expressed his keen interest in the Blue Municipalities Network. The mayor of the island, Mr. Zorzos, also attended the activities, along with the President of the Port Fund, Mr. Sigalas.
Mr. Zorzos and the President of the Municipal Council, Ms. Nomikou, had also a meeting with the head of Aegean Rebreath, Mr. Sarelakos, where they were informed about the latest developments in the Blue Municipalities Network. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to discuss the challenges that the marine and coastal environment of Santorini faces due to the significantly increased flow of tourists, as well as the opportunities offered by the Blue Municipalities Network to highlight the common problems now faced by all the islands.
Lastly, the German network ARD showed interest in the activities implemented, therefore it is expected to proceed with the production of a related reportage
