Antiparos is developing a practical approach to promote tap water and reduce bottled water consumption, while offering valuable insights!

It was the spring of 2024 when representatives of Aegean Rebreath met with Mr. Faroupos, the Mayor of Antiparos, to discuss a program aimed at promoting tap water. This program was funded by Nina Schnabel, a German national, who once again, demonstrated her genuine interest in Greece! At the same time, the municipal authorities, by implementing a holistic plan, proved why they remain pioneers in adopting innovative practices.

The program included a comprehensive plan that began with the development and completion of a questionnaire by 11% of the population, leading to the extraction of necessary conclusions. Businesses were then invited to express interest in acquiring reverse osmosis filters, with the ultimate goal of reducing bottled water supply to their customers. At the same time, the municipal authorities agreed to provide reliable real-time information about water quality – both in the municipal network and at water kiosks – through the municipality’s website. The process was successfully completed with the installation of filters for interested parties.

This initiative first and foremost demonstrated the interest of a local community and its municipal authorities in addressing a problem that plagues island and coastal societies. At the same time, it highlighted the importance of coordination and planning among all stakeholders. Most importantly, it serves as a guide and offers valuable insights for other municipalities that need to take action to address the growing challenges they face, particularly in managing waste generated by increased tourism and beyond!
