2024 has concluded, and the accomplishments of the Blue Municipalities Network demonstrate in the best possible way the usefulness of this unique initiative, which includes the participation of 20 municipalities from Greece!
Since 2020, when the first cooperation memorandums were signed between Aegean Rebreath and the municipal authorities, the Blue Municipalities Network has evolved into a legally recognized entity. Over this period, 50 extensive actions for the marine environment have been implemented by its members. Additionally, 38 educational programs and 2 national-level research studies have been completed, offering significant benefits in awareness-raising and research.
Furthermore, 10 pilot programs were finalized in collaboration with international firms, aiming to develop innovative practices that provided critical insights. The benefits of the Marine Litter Stations are also notable, having contributed to the collection of over 600,000 pieces of recyclable materials and 44 tons of fishing gear.
The municipal councils of the network’s members have adopted a strategic action plan for the marine environment, reaffirming their commitment to long-term and targeted planning. Noteworthy, too, is the development of funding proposals through the network, which secured EU funding for three member municipalities.
The importance of the Blue Municipalities Network has now been recognized both nationally and across Europe, as reflected by the growing interest from national and international media. For this reason, during the latest General Assembly of the Blue Municipalities Network, members confirmed their strong commitment to strengthening the role and work of the network. The conditions are highly promising and the vision is shared by all.
