The Blue Municipalities Network has taken a significant initiative regarding the phenomenon of overbuilding on the Cycladic islands. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister and relevant ministers, the network’s members emphasize the critical challenges faced by the islands due to the asymmetrical increase in overbuilding, as well as the need to avoid creating irreversible situations, especially during a period when urban planning is still in progress on several islands.
According to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) for 2023, more than 2,000 building permits were issued for the Cycladic islands, raising concerns among local communities and authorities about the carrying capacity, quality of life and adequacy of infrastructure.
