The first attempt at a financial partnership among the network members was deemed successful! After consultation with the network members, Aegean Rebreath proceeded to draft a funding proposal for the first three municipalities that expressed interest: the Municipality of Skyros, the Municipality of Alonissos, and the Municipality of Poros. The results justified the efforts and the interest of the municipal authorities.
The work package that will be developed in the three islands meets the requirements of the SeaClear2.0 call, which is part of the European Commission’s commitment to “Restore Our Oceans and Waters” funded by the Horizon Europe 2021-2027 program. The three municipalities are expected to develop activities for the marine environment in terms of prevention, depollution, education, technology and research, waste management, and awareness. The program will start in September 2024 and will last 1.5 years, including specific activities and commitments from local authorities.
Such a progress is hopeful and indicative of the importance of the Blue Municipalities Network at both national and European level! It is no coincidence that this particular call foresees the implementation of projects in the Atlantic & Arctic, Baltic, Mediterranean and Danube/Black Sea basins. In this context, the three municipalities are expected to provide useful conclusions and practices!
