Kalamata is the 15th member and the first municipality in the Peloponnese in the Blue Municipalities’ Network and also the venue of our first major underwater operation of the year. Five years later we returned to the area to inaugurate our new Marine Litter Collection Station within a series of holistic interventions.
We met with all the local authorities (Mayor, President of the Port Fund, Port Authority and municipal officials) but also representatives of the local civil society, in order to inform each other and effectively coordinate our new joint venture. The conclusion of those meetings were the common interest of parties to strengthen and expand our interventions. The presence and encouragement of hundreds of citizens who witnessed our efforts and also contributed was a very optimistic message that started the 2022 season in the best possible way.
The network is now expanding to mainland Greece proving that the need for comprehensive interventions does not only concern the islands. For Aegean Rebreath, Kalamata, as a big city, is another challenge that will surely offer us useful conclusions.
