Municipality of Anafi

Anafi belongs to the island complex of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. It has a coastline length of 38 km and is characterized as a mountainous island with intense coastal fragmentation. According to the 2021 census, it has 293 permanent residents, while during the summer period it receives significant tourist flows.

On the island, there is an active port in the bay of Agios Nikolaos, which contributes to the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourist, and fishing activities of the island. Additionally, there are 6 fishermen active on the island.

Practices for the marine environment

The Municipality of Anafi is a founding member of the network and has implemented the following practices for the conservation of the marine ecosystem:

  • 1 water kiosk
  • 1 Marine Litter Collection Station at the port of Anafi that has contributed to the collection of 44,550 recyclable materials and 2,420 kgs of fishing gear (2019-2023)
  • 1 widespread initiative including underwater and coastal cleanups
  • 2 research programs that included sampling and analysis of seabed sediments and microplastics
