Municipality of Lefkada

Lefkada belongs to the island complex of the Ionian Sea. It has a coastline length of 117 km and ranks fourth in size among the Ionian Islands. According to the 2021 census, it has 21,900 permanent residents, while during the summer season, it experiences significant tourist influxes.

The island has eight active ports contributing to the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourist, and fishing activities of the island. Additionally, there are two fishing associations operating on the island.

Practices for the marine environment

The Municipality of Lefkada is a founding member of the network and has implemented the following practices for the conservation of the marine ecosystem:

  • 1 Marine Litter Collection Station at Lygia port that has contributed to the collection of 19,870 recyclable pieces and 210 kg of fishing gear (2020-2023)
  • 1 Pilot program
  • 5 widespread initiatives including underwater and coastal cleanups
  • 2 research programs that included sampling and analysis of seabed sediments and microplastics
  • 2 consultation workshops with the local community
  • 7 Blue Flags during 2023 for the beaches of Kathisma, Pefkoulia, Agios Ioannis, Ponti, Mikros Gialos, and Gyra.
