Municipality of Paros

Paros belongs to the island complex of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. It has a coastline length of 118.5 km and is the third largest island in the Cyclades. According to the 2021 census, it has 14,520 permanent residents, while during the summer period, it experiences significant tourist flows.

The island has seven active ports, with the main ones being Parikia and Naoussa, contributing to the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourism, and fishing activities of the island. Additionally, there are two fishing associations active on the island.

Practices for the marine environment

The municipality of Paros is a founding member of the network and has implemented the following practices for the preservation of the marine ecosystem:

  • 2 Marine Litter Collection Stations at the ports of Parikia and Naoussa that have contributed to the collection of 78,700 pieces of recyclable materials and 3,990 kg of fishing gear (2019-2023)
  • 1 pilot project
  • 4 widespread initiatives including underwater and coastal cleanups.
  • 2 research programs that included sampling and analysis of seabed sediments and microplastics
  • 2 educational programs in primary and secondary schools
  • Extensive consultation with the civil society
  • 5 Blue Flags in 2023 for the beaches of Livadaki, Logaras, Golden Beach, Pounta, and Tserdakia.
