Municipality of Poros

Poros is an island in the Argosaronic Gulf and is located at a short distance from the coast of the Peloponnese. It has a coastline length of approximately 50 km and is the fourth largest island in the Argosaronic Gulf. According to the 2021 census, it has 3,261 permanent residents, while during the summer period, it experiences significant tourist flows.

The island has one active port which contributes to the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourism, and fishing activities of the island. Additionally, there is one fishing association active on the island.

Practices for the marine environment

The municipality of Poros is a founding member of the network and has implemented the following practices for the preservation of the marine ecosystem:

  • 1 Marine Litter Collection Station in the area of Pounta that has contributed to the collection of 17,390 pieces of recyclable materials and 1,690 kg of fishing gear (2019-2023)
  • 1 pilot program
  • 6 widespread initiatives including underwater and coastal cleanups
  • 2 research programs that included sampling and analysis of seabed sediments and microplastics
  • 1 Blue Flag in 2023 for the beach of Asceli
