Municipality of Skyros

Skyros belongs to the island complex of the Sporades in the Aegean Sea. With a coastline length of 134 km, it is the southernmost and largest island in the complex. The island is located almost in the center of the Aegean Sea and the majority of its terrain is mountainous. According to the 2021 census, it has 3,052 permanent residents, while during the summer period, it experiences significant tourist flows.

There is a main port in Linaria contributing to its commercial, passenger, maritime, tourist, and fishing activities.

Practices for the marine environment

The municipality of Skyros is a member and holds the presidency of the Board of Directors of the Blue Municipalities Network, while the Skyros Port Fund has been an informal member since the establishment of the Network. The Municipality of Skyros in collaboration with the Skyros Port Fund have implemented the following practices for the conservation of the marine ecosystem:

An Academy of Environmental Educators located in the port of Linaria

1 Marine Litter Collection Station in the port of Linaria that has contributed to the collection of 10,500 recyclable pieces and 2,080 kilograms of fishing gear (2021-2023)

2 widespread initiatives including underwater and coastal clean-ups

2 research programs that included sampling and analysis of seabed sediments and microplastics

1 Blue Flag in 2023 for the Linaria Skyros Marina
