During the 2020-2023 period, Aegean Rebreath traveled to 24 different locations in Greece, spanning 6 different regions of the country, to collect data on heavy metals in Greek ports. We proceeded with underwater sampling with the support and scientific guidance of EL.KE.THE, with the sole aim of documenting a problem that remains “invisible” until today. The findings, although based on a preliminary survey that included the collection of one sample from each port, are indicative.
- 19 out of 24 samples (79%) revealed higher concentrations of Lead (Pb) compared to the global average for coastal areas.
- 11 out of 24 samples (46%) revealed higher concentrations of Nickel (Ni) compared to the global average for coastal areas.
- 7 out of 24 samples (29%) revealed higher concentrations of Zinc (Zn) compared to the global average for coastal areas.
- 6 out of 24 samples (25%) revealed higher concentrations of Copper (Cu) compared to the global average for coastal areas.
Our research will continue during 2024 to collect even more data through sampling. In this context, a new underwater remotely operated vehicle (RoV) donated by ELIN to the Blue Municipalities Network is expected to strengthen our efforts.
