Municipality of Argostoli, Kefalonia

Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia island that belongs to the Ionian Islands complex. The Municipality of Argostoli, the largest of the three municipalities of Kefalonia, occupies the central area of the island and extends to the southernmost village, Skala. The island of Kefalonia has a total coastline length of 254 km and is the largest island in the Ionian Islands in terms of area. According to the 2021 census, the Municipality of Argostoli has 23,574 permanent residents, while during the summer period, it experiences significant tourist flows.

There are six active ports in the municipality that contribute to the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourist, and fishing activities of the island.

Practices for the marine environment

The Municipality of Argostoli is a founding member as well as an alternate member of the Board of Directors of the Blue Municipalities Network , while it has implemented the following practices for the preservation of the marine ecosystem:

  • 11 Blue Flags during 2023 for the beaches of Avythos, Ai Chelis, Ammes, Aragia Porou, Lourdas, Makrys Gialos, Megali Ammos, Bouka Gradakia, Platys Gialos, Skala 1, and Skala 2.
