Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades

Naxos, along with the islands of Donoussa, Koufonisia, Keros, Schoinousa, and Irakleia, belongs to the Cyclades island complex in the Aegean Sea. Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, with a coastline of 148 km, and is characterized by rich flora and fauna. According to the 2021 census, Naxos and the Small Cyclades have 20,578 permanent residents, while during the summer period they experience significant tourist flows.

In Naxos, there is a large active port in Chora, which contributes to the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourist, and fishing activity of the island. Additionally, two fishing associations are active on the island.

Practices for the marine environment

The Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades is a founding member of the network and has implemented the following practices for the preservation of the marine ecosystem:

  • 1 Marine Litter Collection Station at the fishing shelter in Chora of Naxos that has contributed to the collection of 22,800 pieces of recyclable materials and 610kg of fishing gear (2022-2023)
  • 1 pilot program
  • 4 widespread initiatives for underwater and coastal cleanups
  • 2 research programs that included sampling and analysis of seabed sediments and microplastics
  • 2 educational programs in primary education classes
