Municipality of Zakynthos

Zakynthos belongs to the island complex of the Ionian Islands in the Ionian Sea. It has a coastline length of 123 km and is the third-largest island in the Ionian Islands in terms of area. According to the 2021 census, it has 41,180 permanent residents, while during the summer period, it experiences significant tourist influx.

The island has a main port in the capital and several small fishing harbors across the island, contributing to the commercial, passenger, maritime, tourist, and fishing activities of the island.

Practices for the marine environment

The Municipality of Zakynthos is a member of the network and it has implemented the following practices for the conservation of the marine ecosystem:

  • 1 Marine Litter Collection Station at the fishing shelter of Alykanas and a Fishing Gear Collection Station at Gaidaros harbor that have contributed to the collection of 32,000 recyclable pieces and 5,400 kg of fishing gear (2020-2023)
  • 4 widespread initiatives including underwater and coastal cleanups
  • 2 research programs that included sampling and analysis of seabed sediments and microplastics
  • 1 Extensive consultation with the civil society
  • 7 Blue Flags during 2023 for the beaches of Alykanas 1, Alykes 1, Katragaki/Eleon Grand Resort, Banana Vasilikou, Bouka, Tsilivi, Psarou
